Dolce & Gabbana can’t stop putting its foot in its mouth.
In this case that foot is wearing a multi-colored, pom-pom embellished sandal.
The Italian luxury label recently uploaded pieces from its Spring Summer ’16 collection to its website for pre-order. Among them is a vibrant bedazzled shoe which the brand called the “Slave Sandal,” though it appears that the company has since renamed them to the “Decorative Flat Sandal” in its online store.
The $2,395 shoes are also available on Saks Fifth Avenue and Moda Operandi sans the controversial style name. Those retailers opted instead for more descriptive titles such as the “Pom Pom Leather Lace-Up Sandal” and “Pom Pom Wrap Around Sandal.”
Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are no strangers to scandal.
They saw major opposition in 2012 after sending their models down the runway wearing burlap dresses and earrings of dark-skinned women.
Last year Dolce made comments opposing gay adoption and in vitro fertilization, which led to celebrities like Elton John to boycott the fashion label.
In February, the designers revealed a line of handbags and T-shirts featuring images of same-sex parents and their children, but it was a move many critics classified as “too little, too late.”
We reached out to Dolce & Gabbana for comment but have not yet received a response.
